Every feature came from a real complaint, not a roadmap meeting.

The problem was simple and annoying. There was no clean way to record audio from a single browser tab without either installing a full screen-recorder, routing audio through a virtual cable driver, or uploading your recording to a cloud service just to get a file back. Zi Labs built Tab Audio Recorder in 2023 to close that gap. The first version could record and export WAV. That was it. It worked, and people used it.

The waveform editor came later, after a pattern showed up in early user feedback: people were recording long sessions and then opening Audacity just to trim the first thirty seconds of silence. That felt like an unnecessary round-trip. So the editor was built into the extension panel itself. It is not a full DAW. It does not try to be. It trims. It cuts. It exports. That is enough for most recordings.

"I needed to record a live webinar for a colleague who missed it. Took me two minutes to set up, the trim tool worked fine, and the MP3 was clean."

"Finally something that doesn't make me route audio through three virtual drivers. It just works on the tab."
